RallyGrow Series | Skill #4: Focus

Focus might be one of the most undervalued leadership skills in today’s world. With constant pings, meetings, and distractions, it’s easy to stay busy without moving the needle. We often confuse motion with momentum.
That’s why we pair Focus with Energy in the RallyGrow module on Maximizing your Impact. Energy fuels your day. Focus tells that energy where to go.
Lights of Attention
In the RallyGrow module, we introduce a helpful model called the Lights of Attention (Spotlight, Starlight, and Daylight), based on a theory introduced by James Williams. More on the three lights:
In the RallyGrow course, we look at energy through three lenses:
- Spotlight (Immediate Focus) - works hand-in-hand with prioritization. After identifying your most important tasks, your spotlight helps you execute those tasks with full focus. Without spotlight attention, even the most perfectly prioritized tasks can get derailed by distractions, reserve your spotlight for high-priority tasks.
- Starlight (Long-term Goals) - helps you prioritize not just daily tasks, but your life’s direction. It reminds you what’s most important in the long run. Without starlight, you risk spending all your spotlight attention on short-term wins that don’t contribute to your long term success. You may feel productive, but you may not feel like you are getting to where you want to go.
- Daylight (Big Picture Awareness) - Without daylight, it’s easy to lose sight of what goals you're prioritizing and why. Daylight ensures that your focus and priorities align with your values, allowing you to adjust when necessary. For instance, you might realize that a goal you’ve been working toward no longer serves your larger purpose. Daylight gives you the awareness to pivot and realign.
We also ask participants to take stock of where their focus is currently going.
What’s stealing your attention? What matters most right now? What could you let go of to make space for what’s essential?
Focus isn’t just about doing. It’s about choosing. Sometimes the most powerful move is subtraction.
Leaders, in particular, have to be thoughtful about this. Your team watches what you pay attention to. If you chase every urgency or shift priorities weekly, your team learns to follow chaos instead of clarity. If you model focused attention—on people, priorities, and purpose—they will too.
Eisenhower Matrix
Another basic but helpful framework to prioritize is called the Eisenhower Matrix. While Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th US President, initially presented the concept, Stephen Covey's mention of it in his The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People book significantly expanded its reach and application in time management and productivity. This is a simple framework to help you prioritize tasks. Divide your tasks into four quadrants: "Focus on the top two quadrants. That’s where your priorities live. Everything else is just noise."

A Question to Reflect On
What’s one thing that deserves more of your attention? And what are you willing to pause, delegate, or remove to make room for it?
You don’t need more hours. You need clearer focus. Because when your attention is aligned with your intention, your impact multiplies.
