This post is part of our RallyGrow series, covering 10 human skills that drive real impact in life and work.

Do what you say. Say what you mean. Own what happens.

Integrity is one of those values that shows up on almost every wall or company website, but in practice, it often gets watered down or misunderstood.

Integrity is part of the Navigate Your Path module in the RallyGrow course. Itโ€™s about alignment between what you believe, what you say, and how you act. When those things are in sync, trust builds. When theyโ€™re not, trust erodes.

Definitions

We define integrity through four powerful components. Together, they form the foundation of this skill.

  • The first is Responsibility. Taking responsibility for your actions, choices, and impact is a cornerstone of integrity. Itโ€™s not about blame. Itโ€™s about ownership. Leaders who own their impact, even when things donโ€™t go as planned, build credibility and trust.
  • The second is Candor. Speaking truthfully and directly, even when itโ€™s uncomfortable, is part of living in integrity. When you withhold or sugarcoat what matters, small misalignments grow into big misunderstandings.
  • The third is Alignment with purpose and values. When your actions reflect what you believe and why youโ€™re here, people can feel it. And so can you. That alignment creates consistency and clarity. This doesnโ€™t mean perfection, but a sense that youโ€™re living from a place of intention.
  • The fourth is Clear agreements. This one often gets overlooked, but itโ€™s essential. Integrity isnโ€™t just about doing whatโ€™s right in theory. Itโ€™s about being specific in practice.

Clear Agreements

A clear agreement means everyone knows whatโ€™s being done, whoโ€™s doing it, and by when. And itโ€™s written down so it can be tracked. That may sound simple, but itโ€™s rare. Most breakdowns in trust come from fuzzy or unspoken expectations.

Clear agreements have four components:

  1. The What: what is going to be done?
  2. The Who: who is going to do it?
  3. The When: by when will this thing be done?
  4. Document the agreement so you can track its completion.

When these are clear, thereโ€™s less room for confusion and more room for accountability.

Integrity Leaks

Of course, even with the best intentions, things fall through. Thatโ€™s where integrity leaks come in. These are the small (or not-so-small) moments when youโ€™re out of alignment. You miss a deadline. You say yes but donโ€™t follow through.

We donโ€™t judge integrity leaks. We expect them. The real question is: how do you clean them up?

Hereโ€™s the process we share, adapted from the Conscious Leadership Group.

  • First, acknowledge the leak. Donโ€™t deflect or hide. Just name it.
  • Second, communicate openly. Let the other person know where things stand.
  • Third, renegotiate the terms. Maybe the deadline needs to shift or the scope needs to change.
  • Fourth, make a new commitment. Be specific and realistic.
  • And fifth, follow through. Thatโ€™s what restores trust.

When you treat integrity as a living system that you maintain and repair instead of something you either have or donโ€™t, you give yourself and others more room to grow.

A Reflection

Where in your work or life is there a leak? Maybe something unspoken, unresolved, or unfinished. What would it look like to clean it up?

Integrity isnโ€™t about being flawless. Itโ€™s about being real, reliable, and aligned. Thatโ€™s what people trust. And thatโ€™s what helps you lead with clarity and confidence.

We invite you to explore these concepts more deeply through the resources below.
